Sun Lanka Vocational Training (Private) Limited

Exchange with Sri Lankan Ministry of Social Welfare, universities, Japanese language education institutions, etc.

Our foundation has been engaging in exchanges with various entities in Sri Lanka, including the Ministry of Social Welfare, universities, and Japanese language education institutions over the past several years. Since 2022, we have established a partnership with a vocational training institution called "Sun Lanka," formed under Sri Lanka's company law. Together, we are supporting Japanese language education and vocational skills training, particularly in the fields of Japanese language education and caregiving.

In the educational initiatives starting from October in San Lanka, approximately 80 individuals are awarded scholarships annually. The recipients undergo a 6-month program, dedicating 600 hours to learning Japanese language and caregiving education. The primary objective is to prepare them for the specific skills examination.

What kind of institution is San Lanka?

Sun Lanka is a limited company registered under Sri Lanka's company law, established in Malabe in the year 2020. Currently, it conducts training in Japanese language, culture, ethics, and the working environment for young individuals in Sri Lanka who aim to participate in Japan's Technical Intern Training Program (TITP), specific skills, high-skilled professionals, or those aspiring to study in Japan. This training is carried out under the supervision of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) and the Organization for Technical Intern Training (OTIT) in Japan.

Furthermore, in job categories such as the food and beverage industry, food and beverage manufacturing, caregiving, building cleaning management, and agriculture, San Lanka provides training for young Sri Lankans under the Specific Skilled Worker Program (SSWP).

Why is Japanese language education necessary in Sri Lanka?

In the courses offered by Sun Lanka in Sri Lanka, the focus extends beyond teaching the Japanese language. It also covers crucial aspects that individuals should be aware of before heading to Japan, such as manners and culture. Learning Japanese is essential not only for handling Japanese language interviews but also for passing Japanese language exams like JLPT N4 or JFT BASIC. A period of at least 6 to 8 months of Japanese language study is typically required.

Sun Lanka provides pre-departure courses as well, offering thorough training to students to ensure a comprehensive understanding of Japan's working environment and culture. Without acquiring adequate language proficiency, individuals may face various challenges in Japan due to the language barrier. Therefore, the education emphasizes not only linguistic skills but also cultural awareness to help students navigate various situations effectively.

How is our foundation's scholarship utilized?
(Target recipients, class content, curriculum, etc.)

The scholarship provided by our foundation is directed towards students facing economic hardships in rural areas of Sri Lanka and those with limited social connections. These students exhibit a strong desire to learn but face challenges in creating a conducive learning environment due to economic constraints. We offer support to these students to help them overcome financial barriers and pursue their education.

In terms of the Japanese language curriculum, we use the teaching material "Irodori: Living Japanese," which is designed to develop basic Japanese communication skills necessary for foreign individuals living and working in Japan. The curriculum covers everyday kanji characters (320 characters). Additionally, we incorporate the use of the book "Minna no Nihongo" (Everyone's Japanese) as part of the curriculum. These materials aim to equip students with the foundational Japanese language proficiency required for daily life and work in Japan.

Developing leaders for Japanese companies expanding into the Philippines

Several Japanese companies that have been operating in the Philippines for over a decade have been requesting Japanese language education for individuals to become leaders in their organizations. Additionally, due to the characteristics of the Filipino people, there has been a program for Japanese language caregiving internships through the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), leading to further education in Japan through the acquisition of caregiving welfare qualifications.

Our foundation obtained approval from the Philippine government last year and, in collaboration with a dispatching agency providing Japanese language and skills education, formed a partnership with Japhil Japanese Language School. This school is conducting Japanese language education in less prosperous and underserved areas of the Philippines.

As a foundation, we grant scholarships to 80 individuals annually and provide support for facility improvement, working towards enhancing Japanese language education and skill training in the region.

What is Jafir Japanese School?

Established on November 6, 2019, our school is located in San Mateo City, Isabela Province, Cagayan Valley, Republic of the Philippines. We are recognized by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) as a certified institution.

The primary objective of our school is to contribute to addressing the shortage of manpower in Japan by providing education opportunities for children in impoverished communities in developing countries. We aim to facilitate the provision of labor resources in Japan while focusing on delivering educational opportunities to the underprivileged youth in these areas.

The Importance of Japanese Language Education in the Republic of the Philippines

There is a need for Japanese language proficiency in the Republic of the Philippines due to the strengthening of economic ties, the promotion of the tourism industry, cultural exchange, the fostering of friendly relations between both countries, and the expansion of employment opportunities.

In Japan, individuals study human relationships, societal awareness, and the formation of a positive character as members of society throughout their education from elementary school to high school and university. In the Republic of the Philippines, many children are forced to drop out of elementary school due to poverty, engaging in family businesses or assisting their parents. Providing educational opportunities for these children can contribute not only to their personal development but also to the future development of the country.

Isabela Province in the Philippines, located in the northern part of Luzon Island, is characterized by a thriving agriculture industry. The region is known for double cropping of grains such as rice and corn, as well as the cultivation of fruits and vegetables. Agriculture plays a vital role in the local economy, with the production and sale of agricultural products serving as a major source of income for the region. However, aside from some landowners, most households are engaged in agriculture as tenant farmers, with low income levels. Many young individuals are forced to abandon their studies to engage in farming to support their families.

Looking ahead to the future, it is crucial to provide education beyond Japanese language instruction, considering the broader perspective for the future of these young individuals, the region, and the country.

As a result of utilizing the scholarships, what changes are there in the Republic of the Philippines?

The utilization of scholarships at JAPHIL NIHONGAKKO primarily aims to provide living support for students from impoverished backgrounds. The impact of the scholarships on the Isabela region includes various aspects such as improving access to education, fostering talent, and promoting economic growth.

By receiving scholarships, exceptional students who had to abandon their studies due to poverty can showcase their talents and enhance their expertise and skills. This, in turn, contributes to narrowing the gaps in education and economic disparities, enabling the cultivation of a more stable workforce. As a result, there is hope that these individuals will emerge as competent contributors to the international community.
